Landscape Strategy Urban planning

Backbone

A landscape characterised by contrast but connected by the ‘Overijssels Kanaal’ a channel that was once the beating heart of the region. My proposition gives the channel a new role in the landscape as the backbone for future developments. To the north a productive landscape, to the south a landscape to live in with new housing developments benefitting from the position along the waterfront with a linear park following the channel.

Lemelerveld once a vibrant village with lots of industry thanking its existence to the ‘Overijssels Kanaal’ as an important transport route for products and services, now a disused and degraded waterway cutting straight through the landscape.

Four new designprinciples create a clear framework for the landscape and give the channel the responsibility of carying the landscape by being the backbone to transformation.

The new revived channel creates the perfect foundation for urban development. Existing infrastructure and close proximity to cities like Zwolle and the Lemerlerberg are exploited to benefit the new residents. Because the waterfront is public property a linear landscape park is following the banks of the channel. Recreational routes are weaved through the park and are connected with surrounding landscape. A nomadic village is born.
