Tussenland

The Alblasserwaard a landscape under threat. Big scale agriculture with a focus on meat and dairy production dominates the sinking landscape. Due to peat oxidation the soils of the Alblasserwaard are steadily subsiding. Currently much of the land is located up to two meters below sea level, making it harder and harder to farm. Transforming this landscape into a sustainable ecosystem is therefore of utmost priority. Even the remaining farmers are acknowledging that the current state of affairs can’t continue the way it did.

A large scale man-made landscape devoid of nature and boxed-in by large rivers. The border between the city and the landscape is hard and feels uninviting. The few valuable green spaces are small and far apart, resulting in a low systemic value and high risk of being turned into grasland. Today the surrounding cities contain more biodiversity than the green ‘desert’ of the Alblasserwaard.

Together with local government and residents of the area an effort has been made to develop a strategy to deal with the problems of the Alblasserwaard and capitalise on the natural systems that make this landscape unique. The toolbox offers site specific tools that guide the transformation and show how al sectors can benefit from this new framework. Soil composition and the watersystem are the main drivers of the transformation.

The fringes of this new landscape offer the possibility for housing projects like the one we see below. By interweaving the build space with the landscape a robust green framework is created that supports further development.

The green network fits onto the existing landscape but is smaller in scale. A diverse programma enriches the landscape and forms the basis for a strong sense of community. Local food production is the norm and residents are involved in the foodsystem and guided by professional farmers.
